Enclosure Tips

Bigger is Better

These are minimum sizes. Larger enclosures are always preferred for reptile wellbeing.

Create a Gradient

Ensure your enclosure allows for a temperature gradient from warm to cool side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How big should a snake enclosure be?

A snake enclosure should be at least as long as the snake, with width and height each being 1/3 to 1/2 of the length. Larger is always better.

  • Ball python (4–5 ft adult): minimum 48" × 24" × 18" (40–75 gallon)
  • Corn snake (4–5 ft adult): minimum 48" × 18" × 18" (40 gallon)
  • King snake (3–4 ft): minimum 36" × 18" × 18" (30 gallon)
  • Boa constrictor (6–10 ft): minimum 6’ × 2’ × 2’ (custom build)
  • Bigger is always better – "minimum" means survival, not thriving
Snake SpeciesAdult LengthMin EnclosureVolume
Ball Python4–5 ft48" × 24" × 18"75 gal
Corn Snake4–5 ft48" × 18" × 18"40 gal
King Snake3–4 ft36" × 18" × 18"30 gal
Hognose1.5–2 ft36" × 18" × 12"20 gal
Q

Do all reptiles need UVB lighting?

Most lizards and turtles require UVB for proper calcium metabolism. Some nocturnal geckos and snakes may not need it, but it can still benefit them.

  • Bearded dragons: 10.0 UVB tube spanning 2/3 of enclosure, 10–12 hrs/day
  • Leopard geckos: 5.0 UVB recommended despite being crepuscular
  • Ball pythons: UVB optional but 6.0 UVB improves feeding and activity
  • Turtles/tortoises: 10.0–12.0 UVB critical for shell health
  • Replace UVB bulbs every 6–12 months – UV output drops before visible light does
Q

What wattage heat lamp do I need?

This depends on enclosure size and ambient room temperature. Start with a wattage that maintains proper basking temperatures and adjust as needed.

  • 10–20 gallon enclosure: 25–50W basking bulb
  • 30–40 gallon enclosure: 50–75W basking bulb
  • 50–75 gallon enclosure: 75–100W basking bulb
  • 100+ gallon enclosure: 100–150W basking bulb
  • Ceramic heat emitters (CHE): same wattage rules, no light (good for nighttime)

10–20 gal25–50W+5–10°F above room temp
30–40 gal50–75W+8–15°F above room temp
50–75 gal75–100W+10–18°F above room temp
100+ gal100–150W+12–20°F above room temp
Q

What humidity level do reptile enclosures need?

It varies by species. Desert reptiles like bearded dragons need 30-40%, while tropical species like ball pythons need 50-60% or higher.

  • Bearded dragon: 30–40% humidity (desert species)
  • Ball python: 50–60% ambient, 70–80% during shedding
  • Crested gecko: 60–80% with dry-out periods during the day
  • Chameleon: 50–70% with misting 2–3 times daily
  • Monitor humidity with a digital hygrometer placed at substrate level
