Chicken TypeStandard
Free RangeNo

Result

Coop Size24 sq ft
Run Size60 sq ft
Nest Boxes2
Roosting Space5.0 ft
Feed Per Week10.5 lbs
Eggs Per Week30

Coop = 6 x 4 = 24 sq ft. Run = 6 x 10 = 60 sq ft. Nest boxes = ceil(6/4) = 2. Roosting = (6 x 10) / 12 = 5.0 ft. Feed = 6 x 0.25 x 7 = 10.5 lbs/week. Eggs = 6 x 5 = 30/week.

212 Large Breed Chickens, Free Range

Inputs

Number of Chickens12
Chicken TypeLarge
Free RangeYes

Result

Coop Size72 sq ft
Run Size48 sq ft
Nest Boxes3
Roosting Space10.0 ft
Feed Per Week33.6 lbs
Eggs Per Week60

Coop = 12 x 6 = 72 sq ft. Run = 12 x 4 = 48 sq ft (free range reduces run). Nest boxes = ceil(12/4) = 3. Roosting = (12 x 10) / 12 = 10.0 ft. Feed = 12 x 0.4 x 7 = 33.6 lbs/week. Eggs = 12 x 5 = 60/week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How much space does each chicken need?

Standard chickens need 4 square feet per bird inside the coop and 10 square feet per bird in the run. Bantams need less, large breeds need more.

  • Standard breeds (Rhode Island Red, Plymouth Rock): 4 sq ft coop + 10 sq ft run per bird
  • Bantams (Silkies, Sebrights): 2 sq ft coop + 8 sq ft run per bird
  • Large breeds (Brahmas, Jersey Giants): 6 sq ft coop + 15 sq ft run per bird
  • Overcrowding causes pecking, stress, and a 20–30% drop in egg production
  • In cold climates, add 1–2 extra sq ft per bird since they spend more time indoors

Q

How many nest boxes do I need?

Plan for 1 nest box per 3-4 hens. Chickens often prefer to share the same box, so you may not need as many as you think.

  • Minimum 1 nest box per 3–4 hens; 6 hens need 2 boxes, 12 hens need 3
  • Standard nest box size: 12" × 12" × 12" for most breeds
  • Large breeds need 14" × 14" × 14" boxes
  • Mount boxes 18–24 inches off the floor, lower than the lowest roost
  • Line boxes with 2–3 inches of straw or pine shavings; change weekly
Q

Can I keep chickens without a run if they free range?

Yes, but you still need a secure coop for nighttime protection. Even free-range chickens benefit from some enclosed run space for days you can't let them out.

  • Free-range reduces run size needed to just 4 sq ft per bird (for bad-weather days)
  • Lock chickens in the coop from dusk to dawn — predators are most active at night
  • Use 1/2" hardware cloth (not chicken wire) to stop raccoons and weasels
  • Free-range hens eat 15–20% less feed due to foraging insects and greens
  • Fence at least 250 sq ft of yard per bird for true free-range foraging
Q

How much roosting space does each chicken need?

Allow 8-10 inches of roosting bar per standard chicken. Roosts should be at least 2 feet off the ground and higher than the nest boxes.

  • Standard chickens: 8–10 inches of roost bar per bird
  • Large breeds: 12–14 inches per bird on 2" × 4" lumber (wide side up)
  • Bantams: 6–8 inches per bird
  • Mount roosts at least 2 ft off the floor and 12–18 inches from the wall
  • Stagger multiple roosts at the same height — uneven heights cause pecking order fights
