Fragrance Tips

Add at Right Temperature

Add fragrance at 180-185°F (82-85°C) for best binding. Stir for 2 full minutes.

Test Before Production

Some fragrances behave differently. Always test burn before making a batch.

Don't Exceed Max Load

Too much fragrance can cause sweating, poor burning, and fire hazards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What is fragrance load?

Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil relative to wax weight. Most waxes support 6-10% fragrance load. Higher loads create stronger scent throw.

  • 6% load: subtle scent, good for bedrooms and small spaces
  • 8% load: medium throw, the sweet spot for most container candles
  • 10% load: strong throw for living rooms and open-concept areas
  • Always weigh fragrance oil on a digital scale accurate to 0.1 oz

Paraffin12%8–10%
Coconut wax10%8–9%
Beeswax6%4–6%
Soy-coconut blend10–12%8–10%
Q

How much fragrance oil per pound of wax?

At 8% fragrance load, use about 1.3 oz (38g) of fragrance per pound of wax. At 10% load, use about 1.6 oz (45g) per pound.

  • At 6%: 0.96 oz (27g) of fragrance per 1 lb (16 oz) of wax
  • At 8%: 1.28 oz (36g) per pound – most common for soy candles
  • At 10%: 1.60 oz (45g) per pound – strong throw for paraffin
  • Fragrance oil costs $1.50–$3.00 per oz retail; $0.80–$1.50 wholesale (1 lb+)
Q

What happens if I add too much fragrance?

Exceeding the maximum fragrance load can cause sweating, poor burning, and fire hazards. The excess oil can pool on the surface and affect candle performance.

  • Sweating: oily droplets form on the surface as excess fragrance separates from wax
  • Smoking/sooting: too much oil creates incomplete combustion and black soot
  • Flame flare-ups: pooled fragrance oil can ignite unpredictably near the wick
  • Weak cold throw: paradoxically, overloading can reduce scent due to poor wax binding
Q

Can I use essential oils instead of fragrance oils?

Yes, but essential oils are more volatile and may have weaker scent throw. Some essential oils have lower flash points, so research each oil's suitability for candles.

  • Essential oils cost 3–5× more than fragrance oils ($4–$15/oz vs $1–$3/oz)
  • Flash point must be above 170°F – avoid citrus oils under 120°F for safety
  • Hot throw is typically 30–50% weaker than synthetic fragrance oils
  • Best essential oils for candles: lavender (flash 160°F+), eucalyptus, cedarwood
  • Blend with fragrance oils (50/50) for natural scent with better throw
